Black Diamond Steve’s Unlimited (BDS) is on a mission to get South Africa moving, one aerobics session at a time. Under the leadership of Steve Baloyi, the organisation has been instrumental in promoting physical fitness and well-being among people of all ages and backgrounds through various outreach programmes and events.
Each year, BDS Unlimited hosts two major events, in April and November, attracting participants from across the country and neighbouring states. This year, in celebration of Freedom Month, BDS Unlimited will host the Aero Showcase 2026 on 11 April at KT Motubatse Hall, Extension 4, Soshanguve South.
The inception of BDS Unlimited stems from Baloyi’s passion for fitness, which was sparked during his time as a student at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
“The idea of starting a keep-fit exercise programme was born in 2000 when I was completing my National Diploma in Supply Chain Management at the former Technikon Northern Gauteng (TNG), now TUT,” Baloyi explained.
Since its establishment, BDS Unlimited has expanded its reach by organising competitions across various sporting codes and hosting outreach training sessions at public venues such as shopping centres and community halls.
Baloyi emphasised the community-driven nature of BDS’s initiatives: “These events are not only about keeping people fit and entertained, but also about giving back to the community.”
He also highlighted the organisation’s commitment to addressing social challenges, particularly those affecting children from disadvantaged backgrounds. He stressed the importance of donations — especially sanitary towels and school uniforms — to support underprivileged learners.
“It’s painful to see our future professionals attending school in torn and faded uniforms,” Baloyi said, expressing concern about girls who miss classes due to a lack of sanitary products.
Over the years, BDS Unlimited has organised boot camps in collaboration with SABC1’s educational programme Skeem Saam, involving local high schools and actors from the series. Baloyi has also had the opportunity to interact with influential figures, including actor and business figure Arnold Schwarzenegger, at the Arnold Classic Africa Games.
Baloyi, who lives and breathes aerobics, also hosts a free session every Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 in Randburg (RSVP required). These sessions are also used as content for his YouTube channel, Aerobox South Africa. In addition, he serves as an aerobics coach at TUT’s Soshanguve Campus.
