Ismail Ntirandekura, a Burundi-born technical wizard, has broken barriers in the electronics field. From fixing watches as a schoolboy to becoming a respected technician, Ismail’s journey is a testament to passion, resilience and innovation.
His love for electronics led him to the College Communal (COCO) in Kigali, Rwanda, where he earned a higher certificate in Electronics. Now 46, Ismail’s expertise spans a wide range of electrical and electronic appliances, including plasma TVs, DVD players, washing machines, amplifiers, radios, irons, speakers, cellphones, air-conditioning units, heaters, solar systems and inverters.
In 2017, Ismail moved to South Africa in search of better opportunities. He partnered with experienced technician Joe Rufuse of Joe Electronics and Radio Repairs, where they exchanged technical knowledge and skills.
Five years ago, Ismail’s entrepreneurial spirit paid off when he established his own workshop at Mabopane Railway Station in Soshanguve. His work goes beyond repairs — he is also a manufacturer who brings innovative ideas to life.
“People need to apply creative thinking to innovate for a greater purpose,” Ismail says. He advises aspiring technicians that passion, dedication and hard work are key ingredients for success.
Ismail’s vision is to grow his business, create job opportunities and transfer skills to local youth, helping to reduce unemployment and substance abuse in the community. Repairing and manufacturing have become central to his identity — a legacy he is proud to pass on to his five children.
Ismail’s journey is not only a personal triumph but also a powerful reminder of the potential within every individual to make a meaningful contribution through creativity and determination.
